This is a good book. I read it right when I got out of the Navy, when i had no job, was staying at my parents place and was wondering what the hell I should do now. I thought I was poor. What I meant was that I didn't have $100 in my pocket all the time anymore.

Then I read this book. Now that's poor.

And then I read it in college when I was a little closer to really poor.

Good choice. Everyone should read it.

Fantastic book. I still remember the scene of him working in the kitchen and the sous-chef taking his big greasy thumb, licking it and smearing the sauce all around the plate before the steak dish went out to the table. Orwell is such an incredible writer because (among other reasons) he was able to deliver such a combination of entertainment and sympathy while describing such difficult and painful situations. But you look at his prose and it is so simple and straightforward. I really should go out and find his book of essays for my bookshelf.
