Ian Rankin tells the story of several race based crimes in Edinburgh through the eyes of DI Rebus and his colleagues. The story begins with four seemingly unrelated crimes whose arcs become intertwined because of the common people working on them and some of the common protagonists in the crimes.

It is a good detective story although I found that it could have been more suspensful.

Yeah, this wasn't the greatest Rankin. Like many mysteries featuring one detective, the character can start to seem slowed by the inertia of the series.

I might suggest one of the earlier novels but definitely not advocate reading all his books.
