3. The Falls by Ian Rankin

Some of my readers read Rankin novels so I will do my best to avoid any spoilers. This is an DI Reebus novel about a missing persons/murder case happening in and around Edinburgh. Flip or Philippa, the daughter of a patrician banking family who is studying at university, goes missing and Rankin tells the story of the case. What is striking about the story is how much darker Reebus has gotten since I first began reading this series. He has moved from a tragic loner character who enjoys a drink to a near alcoholic who is on the verge of giving everything up, repeatedly thinking about suicide, drinking at 10 in the morning, etc. What is impressive is how Rankin weaves this story line in the narrative but doesn't let it eclipse the core of the book.

This is an excellent book, highly recommended.

Cool. I never knew you read Rankin books. Rebus is hilarious - he is the absolute epitome of the dissolute detective who is great at what he does.

I devoured the Rebus books for awhile but found the later ones became a bit too much. I highly recommend the early books esp. Mortal Causes.
