19. Georges Simenon, The Bar on the Seine

This Maigret novel is about how the renowned detective solves a double murder committed by one of the members of a group of happy go lucky weekenders who make a bar on the Seine just outside Paris their local haunt.  It is a great exploration of how the lives of seemingly clean cut Parisian professionals becomes very dark just under the surface.
