19. Make Room! Make Room! by Harry Harrison

Written in 1967 and set in 1999 New York city, this is the story of a cop, a beautiful woman and a Chinese boy as they struggle through their lives. By 1999 the world is severely over populated and replacable resources have come to an end. England is one giant city, New York has a population of 35 million, the rest of the US is similarly over populated, water has to be rationed, there is no more food as we know it today and people are basically at each other's throats.

I am not going to reveal the plot of the story as it would be too easy to spoil it for you. I do recommend this book it is an entertaining read.

Looks cool. I feel like I may have read this when I was a kid but it sounds as though it might be worth revisiting.

ooh, this sounds like a good one.

walkerp tells methat Soylent Green is based on this book (another hole in my cinematic consumption that I have to fill because everyone quotes from it all the bloody time).

in any case, he said the book's better, so i'll read that first.

I enjoyed this book so much, I gave it to my dad for xmas many years ago (he's a bit obsessed with overpopulation). I would like to reread it just to see if it gives that overwhelming sense of people everywhere that I remember.

Is that the edition that you have, because that is a sweet cover!

My edition doesn't have the same cool cover but I agree that this one is very cool.
